Sutro Software was founded in 2004 when proprietor John Petersen decided to leave Vignette in order to follow a more independent and entrepreneurial path. Mr. Petersen decided to leverage the knowledge he had garnered as head of Vignette Portal engineering by initially focusing on taking Vignette Portal administration to the next level. Portal Spy is the distillation of his four years of experience working on Vignette Portal and working with customers to resolve issues with the product. Mr. Petersen believes that Portal Spy will become an invaluable everyday tool for Vignette Portal administrators and will allow companies to realize a much greater return on their Vignette Portal investment.

John Petersen lives in San Francisco at the base of Mount Sutro with his wife Jane. The Sutro logo, inspired by Jane's Korean heritage, is the Hangul "shiot" character, roughly equivalent to the English letter "S" (for Sutro). Sutro's "software with soul" tagline is a nod to John's hometown of New Orleans, home to great soul food and music. But it is also a mission statement, a rebellion against the kind of soulless, compromised, committee-driven software that is too often produced by larger software companies.
